This series of prints depicts a neuropsychological “Stroop Color and Word Test” commonly used to assess the ability of a test subject to prevent the cognitive interference that occurs when the processing of a specific “stimulus feature” impedes the simultaneous processing of a second stimulus, well-known as the “Stroop Effect.” As part of this test, participants are required to read the names of colors that are printed with a divergent color ink, for example the word “red” is printed in green ink. Participants are required to name the color of the ink instead of reading the word which creates a situation of intentional linguistic and cognitive confusion.
This particular version of the test is further complicated for viewers who do not speak Spanish. Tribe brings this test to our attention as a way to question the way the brain operates and the precarity and limitations of our understanding in the relaying of contradictory information.
